The challenge

To develop a systems-based approach to improving research culture across the institution.

What we did

  • Developed a new open and responsible science programme, which was mandatory for every PhD candidate.
  • Developed ways to recognise and reward open science that respect each discipline’s norms.
  • Embedded both in university policy, so they outlast any one person or project.

What changed

Policyrecognition and reward for open and responsible science practices

In their words

“John knows his subject and can explain it, and sell it, to anyone, from vice-deans of research to individual schools. The recognition and rewards matrix he developed was exactly what Erasmus University Rotterdam needed to take open and responsible science a big step further, and his theory of change for the programme's next phase has helped build real commitment. He has been pivotal to our open and responsible science programme.”
Willem Scholten, Chief Open Science, Erasmus University Rotterdam
