When I was a young child, my father was a butcher. He completed an apprenticeship six plus years before I was born and worked in the role for about ten years. Times changed and butcher shops struggled so he changed jobs.
Let me start by explaining the academic publishing system. If you’re not an academic, grab the popcorn, pull up a chair and consider how researchers found themselves freely giving away their labour and manuscripts only to then spend billions of dollars buying the latter back.
Covid-19 opened the world's eyes to the the need for open science. It's important the we learn lessons from the pandemic on and maintain the current trajectory around transparency, data-sharing, and collaboration that science is on. The genie is out of the bottle and here's my thoughts on why I don't believe it's going back in.
